DP1 Students Explore Holocaust Survivors' Stories
Since September, the DP1 English A: Language and Literature HL students have been studying the holocaust by analysing and reading a powerful and insightful graphic novel titled MAUS. Written by Art Spiegelman in 1986, this book tackles the difficult challenge of portraying the true realities of the Holocaust by depicting the author interviewing his father about his experiences as a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor. Following the reading of the book, students were assigned to produce a project in which a survivor’s story was portrayed in a creative way. Students made newspapers, poster boards, diary entries, and travel maps to fulfill the assignment’s instructions. DP1s learned about the holocaust in depth; and explored the emotional distress of not only the victims but also the survivors after escaping. The International Holocaust Memorial Day commemorates the victims of the Holocaust on Monday, January 27, and we wanted to honour it by showing our Somersfield community a few of the projects crafted by our students.
