Town Hall on Adolescent Mental Health: A Vital Conversation
Date: Thursday, October 3, 2024
Time: 5:30 – 7:00 pm
Location: Somersfield Academy, Devonshire, Bermuda
We’re hosting a Town Hall on adolescent mental health, titled “Where to from here? Data-driven recommendations for youth mental health,” this event aims to tackle the pressing issues facing Bermuda's youth with the help of a distinguished panel of experts.
Key Research and Insights
The upcoming Town Hall will feature a presentation of significant research findings and insights from leading experts in the field. The panel, featuring Mr Daniel Cavanagh, Dr Sandy De Silva, Dr Peter Yates, and Dr Ernest Peets, will be moderated by mental health advocate Dr Shawnee Basden and aims to provide insight into the current mental health landscape for adolescents. Their discussions will provide a data-driven perspective on the challenges young people are facing and propose actionable strategies for improvement.
Actions at Somersfield
At Somersfield, we are committed to translating these research findings into meaningful actions. Our goals include:
Enhancing Counselling Visibility:
Regular Workshops
Pop-ups and Support Sessions
Supporting Staff Development: We aim to provide our staff with the necessary skills to effectively support students through workshops and training.
Programmes: We will continue SEL programmes, such as Character Strong and Dare to Care and ensure they meet our evolving needs.
Reinvigorating Learner Profiles: Our core commitment to the IB/Somersfield Learner Profiles will be revitalised.
The Role of Families: Managing Mobile Phone Risks
One critical topic to be discussed is the impact of mobile phones on adolescents. School policies can only go so far so the Town Hall will address the need for families and schools to work together to manage and mitigate the risks associated with mobile phone use. This partnership is crucial for ensuring a balanced approach to technology and mental health.
