Montessori & Nature

The Montessori and Nature class at Somersfield Academy had an unforgettable experience, thanks to Ms. Haycock and Hungry Goat Summer Camp. Our young learners had the delightful opportunity to interact with goats, making for a truly special and enriching day.

The Role of Nature in Montessori Education

Nature is a powerful catalyst for curiosity, exploration, and hands-on learning. The Montessori philosophy has long recognised the profound impact of the natural world on childhood development. By integrating nature into daily learning experiences, children develop a deep appreciation for the environment and the interconnectedness of life.

Dr. Maria Montessori viewed the outdoor environment as an extension of the indoor classroom. She believed that nature provides endless possibilities for experiential learning, “when the child goes out, it is the world itself that offers itself to him. Let us take the child out to show him real things instead of making objects which represent ideas and closing them up in cupboards.”

Cosmic Education and the Connection to Nature

Dr. Montessori’s concept of cosmic education highlights the importance of understanding one’s place in the universe. By stepping outside and experiencing nature firsthand, children cultivate a sense of wonder, respect, and responsibility for their environment. She wrote, “The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth.”

The Montessori Method encourages immersion in nature for the benefit of the whole child. From physical and social development to emotional and cognitive growth, time spent outdoors facilitates a well-rounded learning experience. These early experiences help children develop a lifelong commitment to caring for the planet.
