Innovation & Partnerships for Educational Excellence

May 08, 2014 — At Somersfield Academy, we are dedicated to shaping the future through education that is both globally minded and deeply rooted in our core values. Anchored in our goal of nurturing confident, compassionate future-ready learners, Somersfield stands at the forefront of educational innovation.

We are partnering with Bermuda Education Network (BEN) to host the “Big Ideas Educators Event.” This initiative reflects Somersfield’s commitment to collaboration and lifelong learning, connecting educators, parents, and students with cutting-edge research and practical strategies for improving education.

Exploring Gendered Learning Styles: Insights from Dr Michael Reichert

The event featured renowned researcher Dr Michael Reichert, whose work challenges traditional approaches to education by delving into how gender influences learning. His findings highlight the importance of relationships in learning—boys thrive when they have a strong connection with their teachers, while girls are often more influenced by their peer relationships. These insights provide invaluable guidance for creating inclusive, effective teaching methods.

Dr Reichert’s research also underscores the need to move beyond stereotypes. Boys benefit from active, engaging lessons that incorporate competition and exploration, while girls excel in environments that challenge gender norms and offer full access to educational opportunities in all fields, including STEM.

Bridging Theory and Practice

Somersfield’s collaboration with BEN goes beyond academic discussions.Workshops like Making Math Meaningful by Traci Baillie provided educators with practical, interactive strategies to enrich mathematics instruction. These sessions ensure that teachers leave not only inspired but also equipped to implement impactful techniques in their classrooms.

A Community-Centred Approach

At Somersfield, we believe education is a journey best taken together. Our diverse and inclusive community thrives on partnerships like these, which extend the learning environment beyond our campus. By engaging with local organisations such as BEN and inviting global experts to Bermuda, we reinforce our commitment to preparing learners who can make a positive impact both locally and globally.

As we continue to innovate and grow, Somersfield remains steadfast in its mission to inspire and lead. Events like the “Big Ideas Educators Event” are a testament to our belief that education is not just about knowledge—it’s about connection, curiosity, and courage.

Together with our community partners, we strive to cultivate the thinkers, leaders, and changemakers of tomorrow.
