Somersfield Academy Student Excels at International Debate Tournament Amid Earthquake in Mexico

April 21, 2014 Somersfield Academy student Asha Symons, 13, proudly represented Bermuda at the Pan American Debate Tournament in Mexico. The competition, which included teams from Latin America, Canada, and the US, faced an unexpected challenge when a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck during one of the debates.

The Bermuda team was in the middle of their argument on the lower level of Tecnológico de Monterrey when the tremor began. Despite the disruption, the group safely evacuated and continued to participate in the tournament.

Reflecting on her experience, Asha said: “It was interesting and a new experience for me. I learned where I had to shift my debating style and how to practise speaking more slowly. It was my first time debating internationally, and I had a fabulous time.”

The Bermuda team competed in six debates, earning victories against teams from Argentina and receiving commendations for their skill and unique style, including their choice to wear Bermuda shorts for their first match.

Although the earthquake caused one debate to be cancelled, the team remained determined and adaptable. Asha’s participation and growth during the tournament illustrate Somersfield Academy’s mission to nurture socially conscious, independent thinkers who thrive in international contexts.

Somersfield Academy is proud of Asha’s achievements, which highlights the strength of the school’s educational approach. Her journey underscores the importance of engaging in global opportunities and embracing challenges with confidence and determination.
