Somersfield Stars Shine at Butterfield Front Street Mile
On Friday, January 12, six students from Somersfield competed in the Butterfield Front Street Mile. The Butterfield Front Street Mile is the most prestigious youth running race on the island with famous local athletes Flora Duffy, Tyler Butterfield and Dage Minors, to name a few, stamping their names in its record books throughout the years.
Kicking things off were the primary school students. P6 Evelyn Fahy ‘31 had a very strong run battling for second place and just being pipped at the line in a sprint finish to place 3rd. P5 Leo Heyland ‘32 racing against older students ran a great time of 6:14, he will have an opportunity to race in this age group again next year.
In the middle school girls race, Somersfield had two athletes competing. M1 Elena Bortoli ‘30 put in an incredible performance racing against M2s and M3s. Elena will have two more years to compete in the middle school race so look out competition!
Gabby Cechini ‘28 put in one of the performances of the night. Some other students took the early lead, but Gabby stuck to her own pace. Coming down the home straight, Gabby powered past all of the other students to take a comfortable victory by over 10 seconds. This is an amazing achievement for Gabby!
The middle school boys race was the most hotly contested of the night. Early in the race, a group of five boys separated themselves from the rest of the runners, including Somersfield’s Joey Cechini ‘28. This group battled it out right to the end with just 3 seconds separating first place from Joey in 5th. Well done Joey!
Finally, DP1 student Carina Bortoli ‘25, just missed out on a podium spot in the high school girls by two seconds. Carina has been a stalwart of Somersfield sports for years and it was awesome to see her compete again.
Please join us in congratulating all of our students for their inspiring efforts in these races.
