Badminton: Somersfield Wins 6 Out Of 8 Titles

Somersfield Academy claimed six out of eight titles at the recent Bermuda School Sports Federation Senior School Badminton Tournaments.

A spokesperson said, “Island Games competitor Satya Darrell captured gold in the Over 16 girls singles and doubles tournament. Darrell defeated Katherine Bean Rosario 15-3 in the singles final. Darrell had defeated Ella Newton from Saltus 11-2 in the semifinal while Bean Rosario defeated Somersfield’s Taliah Wade 11-8. Wade beat Newton 15-11 to claim bronze for Somersfield Academy. Darrell and Wade combined forces to win the doubles tournament after defeating the Saltus pair of Maddison Ebbin and Abby Autmezguine 15-4 in the gold medal match. Bean Rosario and Newton finished in third place.

‘Younger sibling Dezirae Darrell was not to be outdone by her older sister as she also captured the Singles and doubles double. Darrell defeated schoolmate Paige Lindo 15-8 in the singles final. Emma Allington completed the podium sweep for Somersfield Academy after defeating Rose Paulos also from Somersfield Academy 15-8 in the third place match. Darrell defeated Paulos 15-6 in the semifinal while Lindo defatted Allington 15-13 in the other semifinal. Darrell and Lindo defeated Paulos and Allington in an all Somersfield final with a final score of 15-9. The all Saltus bronze medal match saw Evelyn Czember and Carleigh Rodney defeat Evie Hook and Xade’ Ingemann-Whitter 15-12.

“Matthew Troake led the podium sweep for Somersfield Academy in the under 16 boys singles tournament. Troake won gold after defeating Jitshuen Liew 15-11 in the final. Max Wallace won the third place match 15-9 over Matty Copeland. Troake defeated Wallace 11-8 in the semifinal while Liew defeated Copeland 11-3. It was an all Somersfield final in the doubles competition with Troake and Wallace teaming up Liew and Xavier DaPonte 21-17 in the final. Warwick Academy pair Ryan Caruthers and Tai Cedenio defeated the Saltus team of Copeland and Camilo Legere 21-17 in the bronze medal match. Troake and Wallace defeated Copeland and Legere 15-3 in the semifinal while Liew and DaPonte defeated the Warwick pair 15-12.

“Warwick Academy went on the sweep the podium in the over 16 boys division. Sebastian Pukk earned Warwick’s first gold after defeating Matthew Banner 11-4 in the final. Joshua Wilson rounded out the singles medal haul with a 11-7 win over Andrew Cox from Saltus Grammar School. Pukk defeated Cox 11-7 in the first semifinal while Banner defeated Wilson 11-9 in the other semifinal. Pukk and Wilson defeated the Saltus pair of Cox and Sam Dallas 21-18 in the doubles tournament.”
